FED: Govt must prevent Mitsubishi cut backs McMullan
The federal opposition says the government must act to prevent further cut backs by
struggling car maker Mitsubishi Motors Australia.
Opposition industry spokesman BOB MCMULLAN has called on the government to immediately
drop the wholesale sales tax on cars to encourage Mitsubishi to maintain its Australian
operation.
He says the Howard government is guilty of almost criminal neglect of the car industry
and the workers and small businesses that are dependent on it.
Mr MCMULLAN was responding to reports that Mitsubishi may wind back production at its
Adelaide plant.
He says it's imperative that the government sends positive signals to Mitsubishi that
it wants them to continue the maximum possible production in Australia.
He says the first step should be to drop the wholesales sales tax which is higher than
the GST which levied on cars from July.
